A memory is a photograph taken by the heart...to make a special moment last forever...and of all the memory-pictures that happy times can bring, the best are those that families make together ~

Mom's Christmas Tree Jewels ~ Memory Count Down ~ Day 13

December ~ 2011

Well, my worst fear came true . . . as I was decorating mom's (1933~2011) tree with her ornaments, I dropped two of them ~ this one (I didn't have a photo of the other one yet). The ornament holders are so old that they didn't grab onto the tree branch. I was pretty upset and at first thought, how am I going to be able to throw these ornaments away . . . then, I had an idea . . . I decided to smash the two broken ornaments into small shards, then I poured them into a clear glass ornament that you can purchase at a craft store. I added some glitter and star confetti. It still really bothers me that I broke the ornaments but at least I was able to make a special ornament out of the little shards that holds very dear times and memories

  1. So sorry to hear about the broken ornaments, but I have to admit, many of mine have met that fate. In this picture I really love the different ways the light is reflected in smaller and larger points of light - so beautiful!

  2. Thank you, Greta . . . I too like how the light reflects off of the small broken pieces. The glitter that was on the silver and white ornament really glistens from the lights on the tree . . . looks very pretty. I know it's the risk you take when using them but I know mom would want me to put them up. I'm glad I didn't toss them and was able to keep the memory in some way.

  3. I only broke one this year. Of course, I still have to go through the tree *undecorating*. I hate breaking my really old 40s and 50s ones..they are so special!

  4. Lisa, I didn't even think about the un-decorating part! I do have the blanket of snow underneath the tree, had I had that in place as I was decorating, I might not have lost them! I won't remove the snow until I'm done this time. One's not too bad . . . I guess we have to realize that's the hazards of using those precious ornaments . . . I too hate loosing the old ones, the ones I grew up with . . . and I was so darn careful!

  6. As pretty as they are, the ornaments are all about memories. I'm so sorry that you lost a couple but what a wonderful way to preserve them!

  7. You are so right, thank you, Apple and that's why they still go on the tree. I know I take the risk of breakage but it's worse leaving them in a box never to be seen! I love holding them and then seeing them on mom's tree . . . wonderful memories.
