December ~ 2011
Well, my worst fear came true . . . as I was decorating mom's (1933~2011) tree with her ornaments, I dropped two of them ~ this one (I didn't have a photo of the other one yet). The ornament holders are so old that they didn't grab onto the tree branch. I was pretty upset and at first thought, how am I going to be able to throw these ornaments away . . . then, I had an idea . . . I decided to smash the two broken ornaments into small shards, then I poured them into a clear glass ornament that you can purchase at a craft store. I added some glitter and star confetti. It still really bothers me that I broke the ornaments but at least I was able to make a special ornament out of the little shards that holds very dear times and memories.
~ Happy Holidays! ~
So sorry to hear about the broken ornaments, but I have to admit, many of mine have met that fate. In this picture I really love the different ways the light is reflected in smaller and larger points of light - so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Greta . . . I too like how the light reflects off of the small broken pieces. The glitter that was on the silver and white ornament really glistens from the lights on the tree . . . looks very pretty. I know it's the risk you take when using them but I know mom would want me to put them up. I'm glad I didn't toss them and was able to keep the memory in some way.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful solution!
ReplyDeleteI only broke one this year. Of course, I still have to go through the tree *undecorating*. I hate breaking my really old 40s and 50s ones..they are so special!
ReplyDeleteLisa, I didn't even think about the un-decorating part! I do have the blanket of snow underneath the tree, had I had that in place as I was decorating, I might not have lost them! I won't remove the snow until I'm done this time. One's not too bad . . . I guess we have to realize that's the hazards of using those precious ornaments . . . I too hate loosing the old ones, the ones I grew up with . . . and I was so darn careful!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kathy . . . it's not the same but at least they are still with us in some way!
ReplyDeleteAs pretty as they are, the ornaments are all about memories. I'm so sorry that you lost a couple but what a wonderful way to preserve them!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, thank you, Apple and that's why they still go on the tree. I know I take the risk of breakage but it's worse leaving them in a box never to be seen! I love holding them and then seeing them on mom's tree . . . wonderful memories.
