Just before the grass was about to be cut yesterday, this flower/weed was spotted in the middle of our lawn in the backyard. I have never seen this flower/weed before and we don't have any flowers remotely close to this growing in or near my yard or home. It's the only one growing out of our lawn in the entire yard. I have no idea what the name of it is or if it's a weed or a flower. I took several shots of it before the the grass was cut and before this pretty little flower disappeared. Maybe the wild bunnies brought it . . . you can see the bunny droppings in the lower right corner, so maybe the bunnies may have had a part in this!?! It's the only explanation I can come up with.

Unknown backyard weed/flower ~

Birds maybe bringing in seeds too.
ReplyDeleteFor a weed it is one good looking speciman!
Would suggest not eating it tho, I have photos of some dessert flowers I am trying to id, and I think some where I saw or heard they are very poisonous. Most are white, but some are pink. Have found growing along side roads, they really stand out. They look similar to this.
Didn't think of the birds but that is a possibility too . . . I was thinking it's a weed but wasn't sure. When I saw it surrounded by the wild bunny droppings . . . I lost any desire to add to my salad LOL! All kidding aside, I made sure the grandkids didn't get any ideas to pick it or put it in their mouths. Thank you for the info, Carol.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a Pink Evening Primrose,

I think it is a wild flower. It is one of those flowers that reminds me of my childhood. We had some that grew in a rocky area next to the driveway. I can't get them to grow!
It looks a bit like an evening primrose, though I've never seen just one. They're quite invasive.
ReplyDeleteThere are evening primrose flowers growing in a neighbors yard up the street . . . very well could be, I will take a walk up there this weekend and see if they look similar, Susan, thank you! My backyard could use some color so it was nice to see that little spot of pink out in the sea of green grass!
ReplyDeleteHarriet, thank you . . . I have never had one of these flowers in my yard before so it's a nice little surprise to me! I will check the website out you left for me.
ReplyDeleteWe have those in Texas. They're flowers that grow like weeds. Among bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush in April, they're lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Amy . . . I do think they are lovely too and I don't mind if they want to grow in my backyard! I could use some color back there anyway so it's a welcomed weed.
ReplyDeleteIt is called Baby Blue-Eyes (Nemophila phacelioides).
