My dear (ex) sweet sister-in-law and friend (we met when I was 15 years old and are like sisters!) sent this wonderful poem and card to me today, she tries to read it everyday . . . she knew I needed a hug and smile . . . mission accomplished. Things have been very stressful and difficult . . . I can't share now but will be able to down the road . . . I just had to share this wonderful poem of "Letting Go" . . . Each year these Daffodils bloom . . . I am always happy and surprised. They bring a bit of Spring time in the middle of Winter . . . even for Southern California. Sending a bit of sunshine out to those surrounded by the cold and snow.

Several weeks ago, I was getting ready to take down Mom's (1933~2010) Christmas tree (yes, I am a bit late) and pack up her Christmas ornaments and decorations. I made myself a cup of tea and sat in a chair just to take one last look around before putting it all way for another year. I looked over at mom's Manger and the sun was shining perfectly on Baby Jesus . . . it was just beautiful. Glad I had my camera fairly close and was able to capture the moment. I know Christmas has come and gone but had to share with ya.

This is Mom's (1933~2010) Mr. and Mrs. Santa, singing mice and Santa's reindeer. If I recall correctly, the mice are from Germany, which are very cute. Mom always had this set up just like this (I copied from past photos) in the entry way of her home. Mrs. Santa's candle lights up and she moves side to side and Santa waves. The lantern Santa is holding lights up also. I took quite a few shots when all was plugged in but for some reason, I am not locating them on my computer. The grandchildren really get a kick out of this little display . . . it's fun to see the smiles on their faces.

This is one of two Nutcrackers that mom always had standing by her front door. I put them up on my entry way antique dresser . . . I felt they were safe there. The other Nutcracker has his nose missing, not sure if that happened before or when they were removed from mom's home and transported here. It's nice to see them as you walk in my front door.

I very much enjoyed sharing mom's Christmas treasures here . . . when I started, I didn't realize that I would learn so much about Christmas ornaments . . . mom has beautiful Christmas Jewels and I feel so very fortunate to have some of them now . . . there is still so much more that is still in her home . . . I am hoping to bring the remainder to my home, someday soon. Mom loved Christmas and when she bought her home here in Southern California, one of the first additions she made was to have cabinets built along one entire side of the garage . . . those cabinets are full of just Christmas decorations and Christmas treasures. Hopefully next Christmas, I will be sharing those treasures here again. Thank you for visiting and sharing in mom's treasures with me.

Mom (1933~2010) owned two Mangers, both given to her by her younger twin brothers, my uncles, Helmut (1940~1994) and Adi (1940~2004), from Germany. Since mom purchased her home (1986) here in Southern California, she would always have two Christmas trees, one in the living room and one in the family room, each Manger would be next to each Christmas tree. I don't have the room for two trees in my home, so I put one Manger in my living room where our Christmas tree is and the other smaller Manger (bottom photo in collage) in my family room.

Emma put the snowman puzzle together and then glued it to a piece of cardboard and created an artful border around the puzzle. These Mangers are very special to me now for so many reasons and that they are from Germany and from my uncles to my mom . . . who all are no longer with us.

These are just a very few of Mom's (1933~2010) beautiful German Christmas tablecloths. Over the years she brought them home with her on her yearly trips while visiting our family in Augsburg . . . she always made sure she added to my collection too. So between us, we have quite a collection of these very pretty and special Christmas linens. The ones in the collage are just some that I used this year throughout the house.

Just after mom passed, I was able to get a small part of her linens . . . I am still in awe of the wonderful shape they are in. She had had them for so many years, yet, they are perfectly ironed, folded and 99% stain free . . . I have always wondered how she did it . . . I have always been afraid to use them because in this family, we are pretty rough on our stuff but I know she would want us to enjoy them . . . that's what her intention was all along . . . and . . . I don't mind the washing and ironing to take care of them . . . I feel very blessed to have such special treasures.

These three ornaments are a set and made of plastic. I am taking a wild guess but I think Mom (1933~2010) purchased them in the early 2000's. She did get a set for me but with a different design. They are pretty but I have to say I'm not especially fond of ornaments that are plastic but at least they won't break and will last for generations to come!

This ornament is so pretty . . . I have no idea when mom (1933~2010) purchased it. It's been around for a while but I can't begin to guess how long. As I have posted mom's ornaments, at times, it's as if I am seeing them for the first time . . . paying close attention and learning all about them. You can tell mom must have dropped this one . . . it's glued together at the top . . . it's still so very pretty. Mom gave me a set of the glass ice-cycles that are on each side of the ornament, back in 2005. They really finish our tree off and the lights behind them make them glisten. I believe we are winding down on mom's ornaments with this one and I will be posting other Christmas treasures that belonged to my mom that may take us to the end of December.

This ornament is quite old and still in excellent condition . . . you can see a bit of the faux spray snow mom (1933~2010) used back when it was popular. This is a Shiny Brite dented teardrop ornament from the late 1950's to possible early 1960's from Germany. This collection ~here~ and ~ here ~ is in my top favorites and bring back so many past Christmas memories.

I have several more of mom's ornaments that I haven't shared yet, along with several of her Christmas tablecloths and linens from Germany she collected over the years . . . I plan to share those here for the remainder of the Holidays and hope you enjoy mom treasures too.

I love this pink glass ornament . . . Mom (1933~2010) has four of them in her collection. All four glass balls, show the evidence of many years of use by having a crackled finish and the pink color has turned to silver in certain areas. I did a bit of research on this ornament and what I found was that is was made in the 1950's by Shiny Brite and that they are Mercury glass (love Mercury glass Christmas ornaments). I remember these always being on our tree . . . I never really appreciated them until this year and it's amazing how mom kept all these ornaments for so long and in such wonderful condition . . . I'm so glad she did.

Unfortunately I do not know when Mom (1933~2010) purchased them and from where they came. My guess is more in the 1990's but I could be very off on my calculations. I am honestly not sure when mom (1933~2010) acquired the five traditional German bells that go at the top of the tree. I do recall mom telling me that these belonged to her father and that having five bells at the top of the Christmas tree is a German tradition . . . I hope that I am recalling correctly . . . I wished at the time I had paid more attention to the story. These red bell ornaments are so pretty and I have them placed at the top of the tree just as mom had done for many years. I will inquire with my Aunt in Germany . . . perhaps she can help me with the tradition and it's history.

I have been trying to research mom's (1933~2010) Christmas tree ornaments . . . this one I could not find, not even close. Just by the design, I am guessing the 1960's but it could be earlier . . . just not sure. It's the only one in mom's collection but I do remember there being more. I honestly do not know how to date this one. I don't recall this ornament but I believe mom (1933~2010) acquired this one in the 1960's. This is the only ornament that seems to be a little worse for wear . . . the hook/hanger is a bit damaged and part of the design is rubbed off. I'm going to try and fix the hanger/hook. It does remind me of a butterfly and still looks pretty, so I decided to keep it on the tree . . . it holds history.

Well, my worst fear came true . . . as I was decorating mom's (1933~2011) tree with her ornaments, I dropped two of them ~ this one (I didn't have a photo of the other one yet). The ornament holders are so old that they didn't grab onto the tree branch. I was pretty upset and at first thought, how am I going to be able to throw these ornaments away . . . then, I had an idea . . . I decided to smash the two broken ornaments into small shards, then I poured them into a clear glass ornament that you can purchase at a craft store. I added some glitter and star confetti. It still really bothers me that I broke the ornaments but at least I was able to make a special ornament out of the little shards that holds very dear times and memories.

As far back as I can remember, all of our Christmas trees always had pine cone ornaments, a German tradition. I didn't have any so mom thought it was time I got with the program! I do not know the exact year mom (1933~ 2010) brought this ornament home but I remember it always being on the tree as far back as I can remember. When I hung it on the tree this year, I noticed that you can still feel faux spray snow on the surface that mom used on our trees over the years! Part of the glitter/sparkle out-line around the pattern is wearing off after years of use and the original hook is still attached. I carefully hung this ornament . . . the old hooks don't hold as well and I was afraid it would fall off . . . somehow I would like to leave it in it's original condition but use a hook that would secure it to the tree better. This ornament was so typical of my mom and her style.

I believe this ornament (one of several that are similar) is as old as I am . . . as far back as I can remember, it's been on every Christmas tree we have had and it is one of my favorites. The design and paint has worn off a bit here and there and around the top, it has become discolored over time. When I removed this ornament from it's spot in mom's Christmas treasure box and held it in my hands . . . so many wonderful Christmas memories filled my heart and how Blessed I am to have this wonderful gift.

Once again, the Christmas season is upon us. As I carry in the treasure boxes filled with my beautiful mom's (1933~2010) Christmas ornaments and decorations, I reminisce about Christmas' past.

Mom had an amazing knack for Christmas decorating, she loved Christmas and every Christmas, growing up was magical. I use to tease her and tell her she should have worked for Macy's - decorating their Christmas display windows. When you walked into mom's house, it's as if you took a trip to Germany. She decorated in true German tradition and it was an incredible sight to see.

This is my second Christmas without my mom . . . I miss spending Christmas at home with her and all of her special touches. For some reason, this Holiday season seems a bit harder than last. Now, I need to apply what she taught me over the last 50 something years. I inherited her family room Christmas tree and many of the ornaments she collected over the last 50 + years. I thought sharing an ornament or two a day, would be a wonderful way to honor her and share the wonderful collection I have grown-up with. I don't have all of her Christmas decorations as of yet . . . but I feel Blessed with what I do have. So for the next 25 days, I will be sharing some very pretty Christmas Jewels with you.

This little guy (name of species unknown) was sitting on this hedge, right in front of where the car was parked. We were attending a birthday dinner . . . as I approached our car, the bird didn't move an inch and let me take as many photos as I liked . . . at first I thought it was hurt but after I was done taking photos, it flew away. This photo was the least fuzzy of all the shots I took.

While out on a walk in the neighborhood, I came across this pretty flower that I couldn't resist taking a shot of . . . but, I don't know if it's an Orchid tree or it's actual name. My walking friend said she didn't think so . . . for now, the name of it, remains a mystery.

Halloween at the neighbors ~

My neighbor up the street just decks out their front yard for Halloween . . . I took several photos but this one was the only one that came out decent. The sun was very bright so the other photos just didn't come out well. I am going to go back and take photos when the lighting is better or more of a night shot because every year, this neighbor goes all out and it's good and it's something to see.

Last Saturday, my grandson's Pop Warner football team, the Patriots, played their last game and tonight was their trophy party! What an awesome team they are. Each team player received a trophy and celebrated with pizza, cake and soft drinks.

Each one of the boys took a turn signing a football for each one of the four coaches that lead this team thru a great season and the boys gave my daughter, the team mom, a $35.00 gift card to Target. Congratulations, Patriots . . . you rock!!

We took our grandson to a Halloween/Birthday costume party yesterday to a friends ranch yesterday. The kids really had a wonderful time . . . Spider Man . . . pony rides . . . Bounce houses . . . and lots of great food! Spider Man was busy making balloon shapes for the kids as you see in the photo above . . . he was a hit.

Terry Bennett Memorial Police Motorcycle Competition ~

The Terry Bennett Memorial Police Motorcycle Training & Competition took place today. My husband participates each year . . . it was a wonderful event and Hubbie rode away with 1st Place Individual Dual Sport Division and the "Slow Ride" Dual Sport Division Winner . . . here's to you, Terry, and to all of our fallen officers!

Today is also our 23rd wedding anniversary . . . Happy Anniversary, Hubbie!

We spent the morning up at my brother-in-laws ranch today. I rushed out of the house and forget my camera and there is lots of neat things around the ranch to take photos of! I used my Android smart phone so I am a little surprised as to how well this came out but for some reason all my photos are coming out black and white . . . must be a setting on my phone . . . I really need to sit and read up on the many features this phone has but I just haven't taken the time to do so. Did well in a pinch though.

Several horses live on this ranch . . . I believe this is one of the posts that is used to tie up the horse or hang your hat or coat on while grooming the horses.

The special commemorative shield designed for San Diego County First Responders Firefighters, Police Officers, and Port of Authority, in the photo above, is being worn on my husbands Police uniform for the month of September, in memory of 9-11.

The Commemorative 9-11 Badge

Many other agencies wanted to join in the 9-11 project but the time frame to manufacture the badges was quickly closing. That lead to the realization. Every police and fire agency across America should be afforded the same opportunity. Starting in 2012, we will be asking police and fire agencies across the United States to join in a national project. We want to provide our EMS brethren the same opportunity EMS personnel had in San Diego in 2011.

The national badge will be designed so it can be used year after year. Each year additional police and fire agencies will sign up for the 9-11 project. Our goal is to eventually have every police and fire/rescue agency in the United States wearing the same optional badge for the month of September.

We will never forget.

Power on ~

San Diego had a massive power outage yesterday. Our home was hit about 3:40 p.m. I didn't think too much of it at first . . . I turned to my smart phone and started inquiring as to what was going on . . . it was then that I realized the severity and how many areas were affected. Our electricity/power returned this morning, we were some of the lucky ones. Many are still without but it is said that slowly today, most will have their power back also.

We made the most of it last night . . . joined our next door neighbors for dinner (pasta and meat sauce!) prepared on their BBQ (thank you Dave and Claudia!), fun and pleasant conversations while the kids enjoyed the swimming pool. Later, we decided to roast marshmallows, I ran home and grabbed the chocolate swirl marshmallows recently purchased!

We even enjoyed being able to hear the owl and quail near by, and, for the first time in a long time, enjoyed looking at the stars up above. It was amazing how our community came together helping those that were in need . . . it was a bit scary and strange there for a while . . . several of our friends were stuck in parking structures and massive traffic jams . . . everyone is ok and that is a blessing. The entire time, my thoughts turned to our ancestors and how they lived without electricity and the luxuries we have . . . I told myself, if they can do it . . . so can I!

Kitchen, before and after ~

Had some remodel photo requests . . . so here are the before and after . . . I had the tile replaced in late 2009 . . . it had been over 15 years (we have lived here for 23 years) and the existing tile was falling apart, my son-in-law replaced the old white tile with this slate looking tile. My mom's husband was going to re-do the cabinets for me . . . with mom's passing and all that took place, the kitchen sat this way until recently.

I had a friend of mine re-do the cabinets. It's a bit of getting use to as far as all that white (I like warmer wood tones) but it does look better and bigger. I have a very dark kitchen and the lights need to be on to see so the white helps. Eventually, I will be putting knobs and pulls on the cabinets and drawers. My vintage cloth napkins (I found at an Estate sale), that I made into a valance (fancy name) for the kitchen window, were put back up today after being washed and ironed.

I was painting my granddaughter's room at the same time this was being done . . . this house was a mess. Still going thru "stuff" . . . purging and putting away . . . way too much stuff! Have a few more things to do to "warm" the kitchen up, but now, I can focus on my family history like I need and want to be doing . . . glad it's done.

Koda was so bored and wanted me to play ball with him so badly but it was just too hot to do anything outside today . . . we are having a record heat wave right now . . . not the best time to be outside throwing the ball around. I had my granddaughter distract him so I could get a decent photo of him . . . he kept running to the door wanting to go out.

We were gifted two sky-box tickets to watch our, San Diego Padres play the San Francisco Giants at Petco Park, located in downtown San Diego this evening. This was the first time I have been to our baseball park since it was built and opened in 2004. I am not really into baseball but this baseball park is unique in that the stadium was built around the registered historic Western Metal Supply Co. building (built in 1909-1910) and incorporated as part of Petco Park.

Our seats were located on the third level and we were actually in a suite that included beverages, salad and tasty main entrees . . . the view was incredible. I love the old Western Metal Supply Co. building and as the sun set, the skyline was beautiful.

We all woke up to thunder and lighting today . . . and then it started to rain. This is the first bit of rain we have had in a very long time and we need it badly. Our thoughts and prayers turn to those battling the fires in Texas, who are also in need of rain out there.

Well, what started out to be a granddaughter & Oma project, turned out to be just an Oma project today! My granddaughter and I completed the first coat of paint in her room on Friday . . . we were unable to paint yesterday, so we made plans to do the second coat and finish today . . . well, she ended up at a friends all day . . . I wanted to get this project done and over with so I have been painting all afternoon . . . by myself . . . . which at first was fine while I listened to pleasant music . . . but being that I am no "spring chicken" . . . I can feel the aches and pains all over! I will be glad to hang up my roller and paint brush for a while.

I am almost done with the exception of one spot I cannot get to because her bed is too close to the wall and I cannot move that thing by myself - she will be home shortly and together we will move the bed and then I can paint the one spot and then . . . we will be done! My kitchen was also painted over the weekend, that was finished today too. I have to say, I am a little tired of the paint smell but looking forward to getting things back to normal (whatever that might be). It's all looking pretty nice though.

My granddaughter and I have been painting her room - it's been interesting (as you can tell by the paint can) and quite messy but we are having fun doing this project together. She has turned out to be a good little painter. We are done with the first coat . . . tomorrow we will put on the second coat . . . it's looking great . . . the room was in great need of painting and I think I was well over the sage green that has been on the walls for over six years now. We went with a soft white which to many is boring but to us, it's refreshing and my granddaughter wants to paint some sort of design on one wall . . . it's only paint right!?!

My daughter gave me this wonderful smelling Pineapple-Mango scented candle and Silver Maple Leaf metal sleeve, for my birthday (love candles). I plan on changing the Summer scent to a Fall scent like, Autumn or Caramel Apples perhaps, so many to pick from! ~ I am very much looking forward to Fall ~ one of my most favorite seasons ~ and it's not so hot.
